Knitted Illusion [video]
As an occasional knitter myself (be jealous of my skills), this is the coolest thing. The image is only visible as you walk by the work, or if someone moves it for you. There's a link for the pattern if anyone feels like they are that talented. I don't think I am.

A Portrait of Dice: art and geeks collide
Scott MacDonald, a Zymeworks employee by day and hacker by night, created a portrait using a program which converts any image into a format which can then be recreated into a portrait made up of die. You know, the hexahedra inscribed with symbols that you use to play trivial pursuit.
This, my friends, is geekdom at it's artiest. I mean, if you can use a program and glue one dice to another, this is a way to earn major brownie points with that special someone, whether he/she is geeky or not. Suddenly you'd graduate from "Adult who still has figurines of Darth Vader and Mega Man above their bed" to "Michelangelo di Geek, a sensitive yet unique and sexy being". Do I sound like I want someone to make me arts like this? Because I do. You can transport it to me after you've finished it, then I'll let you on my spaceship for cookies.
Juuuuust kidding. I only let other aliens in here. The armada would have my second head if I cavorted with humans during my scout mission.
Anyway, read more about this work of art and its creator, as well as find out how to do it yourself at Geek.com .
The Steering Wheel Desk: Because you need your cup in front of you to be happy.
Alright, who ISN'T going to try using this while they're driving around? To me, the Steering Wheel Desk with Cupholders just says, "I'm made for motion, like a plane tray." It looks just about as comfortable too, only you could possibly scoot your chair back without some cranky bastard yelling at you. Although the description says it's only for parked cars, my mind has officially wandered to fantastic places where brilliance is only a hair away from stupidity. Maybe.

Introducing Eyemail: Next up, Mom's Eyephone
Now scientists are working on a contact lens that allows you to have your email sent directly to your eyeball. Not even joking. Didn't these guys SEE that Futurama episode? I know how this goes. First you're enjoying an overly internet-connected life, then you're a zombie. Well, at least they're only making zombie rabbits so far. I kinda want one of those. And a chocolate zombie bunny. Those things look tasty.

Sci-Fi and Fantasy Foods for the Holidays
Ever sat down to your holiday meal and thought to yourself, "This food could use a little more geeky awesomeness" ? Well, the epic people at Neatorama have collected a bunch of links to sites with recipes for delicious fantasy and sci-fi foods you can serve to your geeklings (or freeloaders) on special occasions, like breakfast and dinner. Every day. Who doesn't want to have Lembas bread to keep them full on their long trips there and back again? Perhaps you'd rather eat butterbeer with your Wookie-ookies?
Whatever your tastes are, they probably have something for you this holiday season. Check it out here.
A Lovely Day for a Star Wars Wedding
I've seen other Star Wars weddings, and I'm constantly wondering why I don't know anyone this epic. This one was really dedicated to detail...except for the fact that Anakin is getting married to his daughter. Confusing? A little bit. But their costumes look awesome.

Here it comes: The last binary day of the Century
11.11.11.
I have been waiting for this day for the past thousand years. Sure, it may actually be 11.11.2011, but if you're really bothered by that 2, I say
So make sure you party it up tomorrow. We won't be celebrating another binary year in our lifetimes, and our geeky progeny will envy us when we tell them about all of the stupid stuff we did to celebrate.

What's wrong with my Nook: The Smell of Books Aerosols

While I long to own a Futurama-like library consisting of one giant electronic storage device, I've always felt Nooks and Kindles just rob you of the joy a smelly, crisp new book can bring you. Mmm, so many chemicals, so few brain cells to kill!
Well, thanks to Smell of Books, it is now possible to fulfill your wildest fantasies with your e-reader (well, maybe not ALL of them...unfortunately the robotic cocktail-mixing arm just hasn't been working out in trials). The aerosol cans offer a variety of books smells, including New Book, Classic Musty, Crunchy Bacon, Scent of Sensibility, and Eau You have Cats. Seriously, where is the "Buy" button?

Forget Waldo: Where's the Doctor?

Can you spot the Doctor? |
Penguin Books just put out book called "Where's the Doctor?" Instead of looking for that strange looking man with poor fashion sense and an unusual name, you can instead find the Doctor in crowds of Daleks and Cybermen-- IF you can spot him. Hell, I know the book is supposed to be for 8-12 year olds, but I'm thinking of buying one for myself. I sense hours of child-like joy ahead of me!

MUST TRY: Quantum Levitation
The only thing that would have made this demonstration of quantum levitation MUCH cooler would have been a little cut-out of Marty Mcfly on that disc as it raced around the track.

Violent Video Games Not to Blame for Hostility in Kids
USA Today reports that violent content in video games does not cause kids to behave violently toward others. While highly competitive games can cause people with certain personality traits to increase in hostility, the study showed that we need to look more at the person and less at their gaming habits for the source of such behavior.
Kids who are moody, unfriendly, or impulsive probably are the ones you want to keep from playing too many video games, according to the study.

Spock Attends His Final Convention
Live long and prosper, Nimoy. |
Last weekend, Leonard Nimoy bid his last convention good-bye with a "live long and prosper". At 80 years old, Nimoy has already said he's retired and not going to be in the next Star Trek movie-- which, personally, I am very sad about. Having one of the original cast in the new film made me feel like I wasn't losing the characters/show I loved as a kid (no, I'm not that old. My father just raised me right-- on Star Trek every night before bed well into my tweens. Really.)
Anyway, I hope to see Nimoy walking down the street one of these days. Really, I'm a fan of not only his work in Star Trek, but also his appearances on pretty much anything, from Mission Impossible (because the TV show kicks the movies' ugly, overly-Tom-Cruise-focused butts) to Columbo. Nimoy is one of the finest actors to grace my childhood TV screens, so here's a shout out to him in his retirement-- may he truly live long and prosper.

We Only Saw the Last-Minute Ending of Rise of Planet of the Apes
...where's my cataclysmic man-ape war?! |
Well, that explains a lot. According to Badass Digest, the ending to the new Planet of the Apes movie originally was nothing like what any of us naive theatre-goers saw. Now, as much as I really, really enjoyed that movie (the CG was so fine I could have run up to the screen and rubbed myself all over it just to feel it's plushy awesomeness on my skin. I would have too if my feet hadn't gotten stuck to the floor with coca-cola marinated Mike 'n' Ikes), the ending threw me. I mean, where was the cataclysmic moment when they blew up the statue of liberty? They could have at least, I don't know...blown up SOMETHING. I mean, what's with these pacifist monkeys anyway? They were so justified. I was ready to watch sweet little Caesar eat someone in the end.
Read about the alternative ending after the jump.

Naruto Shippuden: Dreamers Fight Part 1 (video)
Quite possibly the coolest fan video I have ever seen, Naruto Shippuden: Dreamers Fight deserves the highest geeky praise. While the fighting is what really got me excited, I have to say there were even moments when the characters completely convinced me they were the real Lee and Naruto bruising knuckles and throwing down some serious ninjutsu. A Message from 1967: Live Long and Prosper
Today in 1967, Spock uttered the first "Live long and prosper" in the episode Amok Time. Thank you, ThinkGeek, for recognizing this iconic day in geek history.
I think I'll need to watch this episode tonight to celebrate and pet my stuffed tribble. Of course I have one! Don't you? Those things are hilarious.
