A Portrait of Dice: art and geeks collide

Scott MacDonald, a Zymeworks employee by day and hacker by night, created a portrait using a program which converts any image into a format which can then be recreated into a portrait made up of die. You know, the hexahedra inscribed with symbols that you use to play trivial pursuit.

This, my friends, is geekdom at it's artiest. I mean, if you can use a program and glue one dice to another, this is a way to earn major brownie points with that special someone, whether he/she is geeky or not. Suddenly you'd graduate from "Adult who still has figurines of Darth Vader and Mega Man above their bed" to "Michelangelo di Geek, a sensitive yet unique and sexy being". Do I sound like I want someone to make me arts like this? Because I do. You can transport it to me after you've finished it, then I'll let you on my spaceship for cookies.

Juuuuust kidding. I only let other aliens in here. The armada would have my second head if I cavorted with humans during my scout mission.

Anyway, read more about this work of art and its creator, as well as find out how to do it yourself at Geek.com .

Don't Step on My Poetry

Arguably, you could say building a machine to spray art kind of lowers the artistic value of the practice, but I'm always open to creativity in all it's forms. Unless it involves squirrels and any sort of gel. That's just sick and you should just stop. What?

Anyway, this guy made a machine that sprays out calligraphic poetry in water. Kudos to him for doing something no one has done!

Naruto Shippuden: Dreamers Fight Part 1 (video)

Quite possibly the coolest fan video I have ever seen, Naruto Shippuden: Dreamers Fight deserves the highest geeky praise. While the fighting is what really got me excited, I have to say there were even moments when the characters completely convinced me they were the real Lee and Naruto bruising knuckles and throwing down some serious ninjutsu. Read the background info after the jump.

Calling All Artists!

Are you an awesome artist? Are you kind of a good doodler? Have you ever picked up a pen? Then the geeks need you!

I Like to Geek is in need of a new blog icon of awesomeness, and we just aren't talented enough to do it ourselves. Our skills rest in surfing the internet for hours on end. Damn it, Jim, we're bloggers, not artistic people!

So can you help us out? We'd love to hear your ideas! Either comment or email us at our new email address, iliketogeek@gmail.com

If we pick your design, you get props for life!

The Explanation Behind Obi-Wan's New Call

I'm back, kids. Yeah, yeah, you missed me SO much, I know. I can tell. The love is just radiating right through my browser. Hm, that might just be some form of deadly radiation, actually. Well, I'll believe it's love.

Anyway, I thought I'd share this piece of art. This video gave me high hopes of being totally entertained when the Blu-ray comes out, because hell, this is LMFAO hilarious, and I'm sure the millions of youtube comedians out there will continue to crank these out for years to come.

Anyway, if you're really bored and want to hear me complain/talk about all the cool stuff I was IN THE MIDDLE OF POSTING when the blackout killed my beloved computer (RIP, Barbarous Roman the Third), go to the jump.

The Best Thing Since Cartoon Lunchboxes: Lunch Bag Art

I really don't know who would win the showdown here.
I can just hear him now, "Shllllrrr...This is your opponent, earthling..."

There are people in this world whom I would adopt as various family members. The guy who makes these is one of them. This Lunch Bag Art creating genius and artistic superman makes these for his kids during his lunch breaks. Best dad ever? Yes, I think so.

More pics of the most epic lunch bag art you've ever seen after the jump. Oh, and they aren't all Sci-Fi stuff either. Seriously, I think this Dad has seen just about everything out there, from anime to Calvin and Hobbes. ADOPT ME ALREADY, DUDE.

Skrillex Looks Like Corey Feldman...

Not sure how many of our readers are a liking the dubstepping but, this video by Skrillex sure takes the cake for freaky ish (radio edit).

Virgin Zoidberg Tat

No words. Just a moment of silence...and the lingering thought...will he/she regret this tattoo 30 years from now when the show is but a distant memory?

A Piece of History: The First 3D Digital Film

According to Open Culture, this video began what some of us might recognize as modern techniques for creating CG life on the big screen. This film showcases the making of a hand which looks undeniably like a disembodied clip of a 3rd generation Sim performing various hand movements. Considering this is a video from 1972, that's pretty impressive.

R2D2 Helmet

Jenn Hall and R2 embark on a scooter ride through the city.
If R2 can lock down the stabilizers on your X-wing and help you take down the death star, then he seems like the obvious choice for keeping your brain safely secured in your skull during a perilous bike/scooter/other-wheeled ride. Jen Hall of Blogspot created this epic piece of safety headwear. Check out her page to see how it's done and how to make one yourself.

Atari Jewelry Box for That Bling-Wearing Someone

Do you know a geek who has jewelry just randomly laying around their house? Well then this is the gift that will make their mother's day. These awesome Atari jewelry boxes come from Instructibles user annahowardshaw, and if I wouldn't lose appendages making it, I'd have one in an hour. Or a few days. Maybe a month. Nevermind.

Blast to the Future-Past: Coattails and Gigantic Scary Hats

Now that it's 2011, I thought it would be nice to look at the past decade's wonderful inventions and celebrations, such as our individual blimps and world-encompassing coasters that carry us quickly and safely to our destinations. Also, let's not forget those crazy flower festivals where we all get plastered and try to knock eachother off our car-planes with handfuls of petals while dressed as flashy deep-sea divers.

Video: The Science and Mathematics of Sound

This video by Vi Hart explains sound and it's cool complexity-- while using lots of little text bubbles, making it that much more visually interesting. Plus, you gotta think any woman throwing out mathematics with that cute little voice is pretty sexy.

G+ VS FB

This totally tubular infographic shows the battle between Facebook and Google+. It shows how the 2 social networking companies privacy settings, friends, chat and other features stack up against each other. It is "Bewii Intwisting."

Tron Bike for Tiny Geeks

Last week we saw the pimp Light Cycle for big kids, and now it seems the real kids can be badass too! This little bike for tykes is supposed to help kids learn how to master having only two wheels, using a method I assume consists mainly of being awesome. This is just a prototype, but I'm hoping it becomes a reality. Do I have kids? Nah, and even if I did, I'm riding this one seeing as the grown-up version is out of my price range for sure. Not to mention this bike's required skill level seems right up my alley.

Check out the Trek Light Cycle Push Bike here.

Best. Engagement. Pictures. EVER

These people are the kind that you WANT to go to their wedding. No doubt there will be cookies and Stormtroopers there, intermingled with the typical crap you find at weddings. All I know is, I see people like this getting married, and I have hope that mankind may yet survive the coming apocalypse.
See what I'm talking about after the jump.
