A Portrait of Dice: art and geeks collide

Scott MacDonald, a Zymeworks employee by day and hacker by night, created a portrait using a program which converts any image into a format which can then be recreated into a portrait made up of die. You know, the hexahedra inscribed with symbols that you use to play trivial pursuit.

This, my friends, is geekdom at it's artiest. I mean, if you can use a program and glue one dice to another, this is a way to earn major brownie points with that special someone, whether he/she is geeky or not. Suddenly you'd graduate from "Adult who still has figurines of Darth Vader and Mega Man above their bed" to "Michelangelo di Geek, a sensitive yet unique and sexy being". Do I sound like I want someone to make me arts like this? Because I do. You can transport it to me after you've finished it, then I'll let you on my spaceship for cookies.

Juuuuust kidding. I only let other aliens in here. The armada would have my second head if I cavorted with humans during my scout mission.

Anyway, read more about this work of art and its creator, as well as find out how to do it yourself at Geek.com .

Sci-Fi and Fantasy Foods for the Holidays

Ever sat down to your holiday meal and thought to yourself, "This food could use a little more geeky awesomeness" ? Well, the epic people at Neatorama have collected a bunch of links to sites with recipes for delicious fantasy and sci-fi foods you can serve to your geeklings (or freeloaders) on special occasions, like breakfast and dinner. Every day. Who doesn't want to have Lembas bread to keep them full on their long trips there and back again? Perhaps you'd rather eat butterbeer with your Wookie-ookies?

Whatever your tastes are, they probably have something for you this holiday season. Check it out here.

A Lovely Day for a Star Wars Wedding

I've seen other Star Wars weddings, and I'm constantly wondering why I don't know anyone this epic. This one was really dedicated to detail...except for the fact that Anakin is getting married to his daughter. Confusing? A little bit. But their costumes look awesome.

MUST TRY: Quantum Levitation

The only thing that would have made this demonstration of quantum levitation MUCH cooler would have been a little cut-out of Marty Mcfly on that disc as it raced around the track.

New Avengers Trailer: I knew there was some reason for the Thor and Captain America movies

Not that the movies were really bad, but didn't anyone else leave the theaters with an empty feeling after seeing that both Thor and Captain America had little more value than being Avengers prequels? Perhaps it was just me, but I had the same gnawing regret about buying tickets to see them as I had when I saw X-men Origins: Wolverine-- except the Avenger Origins movies were an honest to goodness bait-n-switch. Now that's not fair Paramount-- if I had wanted your ugly friend, I would have spent my money on that creature and not on your fine promises.

We Only Saw the Last-Minute Ending of Rise of Planet of the Apes

...where's my cataclysmic man-ape war?!

Well, that explains a lot. According to Badass Digest, the ending to the new Planet of the Apes movie originally was nothing like what any of us naive theatre-goers saw. Now, as much as I really, really enjoyed that movie (the CG was so fine I could have run up to the screen and rubbed myself all over it just to feel it's plushy awesomeness on my skin. I would have too if my feet hadn't gotten stuck to the floor with coca-cola marinated Mike 'n' Ikes), the ending threw me. I mean, where was the cataclysmic moment when they blew up the statue of liberty? They could have at least, I don't know...blown up SOMETHING. I mean, what's with these pacifist monkeys anyway? They were so justified. I was ready to watch sweet little Caesar eat someone in the end.

Read about the alternative ending after the jump.

Naruto Shippuden: Dreamers Fight Part 1 (video)

Quite possibly the coolest fan video I have ever seen, Naruto Shippuden: Dreamers Fight deserves the highest geeky praise. While the fighting is what really got me excited, I have to say there were even moments when the characters completely convinced me they were the real Lee and Naruto bruising knuckles and throwing down some serious ninjutsu. Read the background info after the jump.

PWNED: Online Gamers Decipher AIDS-like Virus Enzyme Structure

Today, I conquered a monomeric protease enzyme. Tomorrow, Azeroth!
Gamers pride! Within three weeks, a group of gamers managed to create an accurate model of the structure of an AIDS-like virus enzyme which had stumped scientists for years, using an online video game called Foldit. Read more after the jump.

SUPER MARIO CEREMONY -The 30th Anniversary Medley- (video)

MUST. HAVE. SONG. Whoever made this is an awesome human being and should be enshrined.

A Message from 1967: Live Long and Prosper

Today in 1967, Spock uttered the first "Live long and prosper" in the episode Amok Time. Thank you, ThinkGeek, for recognizing this iconic day in geek history.

I think I'll need to watch this episode tonight to celebrate and pet my stuffed tribble. Of course I have one! Don't you? Those things are hilarious.

The Explanation Behind Obi-Wan's New Call

I'm back, kids. Yeah, yeah, you missed me SO much, I know. I can tell. The love is just radiating right through my browser. Hm, that might just be some form of deadly radiation, actually. Well, I'll believe it's love.

Anyway, I thought I'd share this piece of art. This video gave me high hopes of being totally entertained when the Blu-ray comes out, because hell, this is LMFAO hilarious, and I'm sure the millions of youtube comedians out there will continue to crank these out for years to come.

Anyway, if you're really bored and want to hear me complain/talk about all the cool stuff I was IN THE MIDDLE OF POSTING when the blackout killed my beloved computer (RIP, Barbarous Roman the Third), go to the jump.

Happy International Bacon Day!

Yes, the day we've all been waiting for. Well, maybe all of you geeks out there. Sadly, I wasn't even aware of today's significance, and I am all out of bacon in my home. I thought of throwing some spam into a frying pan, but it just seemed a bit pathetic. So, to all you carnivorous bacon-crunchers, sizzle some extra portions of greasy goodness for Techie G, and enjoy!

Sci-fi in RL: Live Heart in a Box Makes for More Successful Transplants

Geeks are Sexy posted an article today about a new ground-breaking method of organ transplantation-- keeping the organ (such as a heart) functioning while in transport. Compared to the method of packing the organ in ice in coolers during transit, this will allow for better matching of organs to patients, and therefore less chance rejection.

TODAY: DC Relaunch

Well, if Lumberjack Films say it's going to be okay, then it must be! Then again, that's what people have been saying about Anne Hathaway playing Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises, but I still have my doubts. She may look smokin' hot in that one picture, but it's going to take more than a mouthful of drool to win me over. As for this video, they lost my faith when they said Aquaman was going to be cool. Seriously?

Mari0: Mario meets Portal

This is legit, people. Super Mario Bros. and Portal, mixed into one fantastically wonderful game. It's like the maple bacon of game mash-ups. Stabyourself game studios is working on Mari0, where you can co-op with as many friends as you want and portalize your way through the classic game.

Blast to the Future-Past: Coattails and Gigantic Scary Hats

Circa 1900 postcard Leominster
Who doesn't see this view on an average day? (Via Flickr)

Now that it's 2011, I thought it would be nice to look at the past decade's wonderful inventions and celebrations, such as our individual blimps and world-encompassing coasters that carry us quickly and safely to our destinations. Also, let's not forget those crazy flower festivals where we all get plastered and try to knock eachother off our car-planes with handfuls of petals while dressed as flashy deep-sea divers.

Sign Me Up!

I had always told a good friend of mine that when they day comes, I want him to be a part of my plan to get my robot arm. The plan was this. Take a wall and cut a whole in it. Tie a rope around my arm focusing on the base nearest the shoulder. Tie it to his truck after putting my arm through the hole. FLOOR IT! YEEEEE HAW! Presto, new robot arm. Well that was the plan if I had medical insurance and it needed to look like an "accident."
Of course looking back now maybe ripping my arm out wouldn't be the best idea.

BF3, SQUIRT!

This might be my most anticipated game since BF:BC2 came out, and the Frostbite 2 engine looks AMAZING!
