GDC is Coming

Some of you know me, and some of you don't. For those of you who don't, I design video games for a living, so naturally I'll be going to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco March 5th-9th.

Fiction? Almost.

It's always nice to play a game or watch a movie and see a place that is beyond creepy as hell. If there's anything better than that, it may be the fact that some of these settings are actually based on real places. Cracked.com tells us about 6 Fictional Places You Didn't Know Actually Existed, including Arkham Asylum, Middle Earth, and Silent Hill. I know what you're thinking: finally a place to do all those movie scene re-enactments. Just watch out for monsters.

Knitted Illusion [video]

As an occasional knitter myself (be jealous of my skills), this is the coolest thing. The image is only visible as you walk by the work, or if someone moves it for you. There's a link for the pattern if anyone feels like they are that talented. I don't think I am.

The NCC-USPS Goes Where No Mailbox Has Gone Before

By far the coolest functional geek art I've seen so far this year (yuk yuk), this Enterprise-inspired mailbox graces the home of a Reddit user's uncle. It has solar powered lights, which, sadly, I can't find any pictures of. I'm thinking of building one myself, if I wasn't so worried about the Romulans across the street blasting it to pieces.

Batman Through the Ages

It's time to see all the styles Mr. Fashion-bat has gone through trying to intimidate the baddies. I'm not sure what he was going for with the brightest of these, but maybe he was getting jealous of the villains' wide array of outfit colors vs. his normal subdued tones.

Time to break out Santa's milk and wookies!

How's it going, geeks? I know you're all excited for Christmas or some other holiday this December. Heck, maybe you're just excited because this year is almost over and we only have approximately 388 days until we either burn in a fiery Mayan demise or live, laugh, have a beer and die another day.

Whatever you may be looking forward to, I personally celebrate Christmas because I get presents. So, in order to get into the holiday spirit, I thought I'd help you decorate this year. I know, I'm always looking out for you. You can send me money as thanks. Or just worship me for being an a holiday geek goddess. And I don't want fruit or any crap like that...BRING ME YOUR ELECTRONICS!

Yes, the sweet aroma of burning silicon pleases me. So here it is, a list of sites with awesome decoration ideas...and of you're lucky, I might tell you a few of my own favorites after the jump.

The Privacy Monitor

This bring a whole new meaning to privacy. This short video shows what it does and this link show you how to do it. :) Have fun. But not too much, because that can be seen with a black light.

A Portrait of Dice: art and geeks collide

Scott MacDonald, a Zymeworks employee by day and hacker by night, created a portrait using a program which converts any image into a format which can then be recreated into a portrait made up of die. You know, the hexahedra inscribed with symbols that you use to play trivial pursuit.

This, my friends, is geekdom at it's artiest. I mean, if you can use a program and glue one dice to another, this is a way to earn major brownie points with that special someone, whether he/she is geeky or not. Suddenly you'd graduate from "Adult who still has figurines of Darth Vader and Mega Man above their bed" to "Michelangelo di Geek, a sensitive yet unique and sexy being". Do I sound like I want someone to make me arts like this? Because I do. You can transport it to me after you've finished it, then I'll let you on my spaceship for cookies.

Juuuuust kidding. I only let other aliens in here. The armada would have my second head if I cavorted with humans during my scout mission.

Anyway, read more about this work of art and its creator, as well as find out how to do it yourself at Geek.com .

OHHHHHH!

Now you know what I am excited for! Plus Tom Hardy is awesome and so is Joseph Gordon-Levit. This is supposedly "the last one" but we will see. Everyone loves these movies. Dark and gritty Super Hero movies are where it's at, not those fluffy happy ones...
